Arab Preparatory Meeting to Launch Popular Campaign to Lift Sanctions on Syria

The meeting of the Arab preparatory meeting to discuss a plan of action to launch a popular Arab and international campaign to lift the unilateral coercive economic measures imposed on Syria began in Beirut today.

“The economic siege imposed on Syria is the latest episode in the war that has been going on for more than eight years against this authentic Arab country and its people, in order to subjugate it and disregard its historical positions and commitment to the resistance and struggle against colonial and Zionist projects,” Majdi al-Masrawy said in a speech on behalf of the General Secretariat of the Arab National Conference and the Arab International Center for Communication and Solidarity.

Masrawy noted the distinguished Syrian-Lebanese relations and said that, “the Lebanese realize that any harm inflicted on Syria affects Lebanon, its security, its economy, its role and its location.”

For his part, Khalid al-Sufayani, the General Coordinator of the National Islamic Conference, noted the steadfastness of the Syrian people and its cohesion with its leadership and the Syrian Arab Army in the face of the global war imposed on Syria, stressing that Syria is the spearhead of resistance against all conspiracies against the Arab nation.

For her part, the Director General of the Arab International Center for Communication and Solidarity, Rehab Mekhal, condemned the unilateral coercive measures imposed on Syria. She reviewed a working paper prepared by Dr. Ziad Hafez, former Secretary-General of the Arab National Conference, which called for the formation and following up of a committee emanating from the meeting, to face and abolish the coercive measures imposed on Syria.

For his part, Dr. Khalaf al-Muftah, Director-General of the Jerusalem International Foundation, said in his paper that the war of aggression against Syria has targeted the Arab resistance. He stressed that coercive economic measures imposed on the Syrian people are contrary to international and humanitarian law.

The meeting was attended by public secretaries, heads of Arab conferences, federations and organizations and a representative of the Syrian embassy in Lebanon.
