Statement Regarding the Latest Decree by the Assad Regime

Nothing positive can be achieved with Bashar al-Assad’s decree regarding “amnesty” issued on April 16, 2013, as Assad’s words do not reflect the critical situation on the ground in Syria.

This decree is nothing more than pretence at amnesty issued by a criminal to his victims. In fact, it alludes to the Assad regime’s blatant denial of its crimes against humanity. Furthermore, the decree distracts from the possibility of reaching real solutions. The Syrian Coalition sees this decree as no more than an opportunity to release real criminals and create space to detain more honorable people.

In light of the current situation, we at the Syrian Coalition cannot afford to expect any positive behaviors from a regime that chooses to kill those who call for freedom and unleashes armed gangs to terrorize the people into silence.

The Syrian Coalition reiterates its belief that solving the Syrian crisis through political initiatives cannot be accomplished outside the parameters set and agreed upon by the General Authority of the Syrian Coalition. These parameters align with the aspirations and goals of the Syrian people and their revolution.

We ask for freedom for our prisoners, health for our wounded, and compassion for our martyrs.

Long live Syria and its people free and with honor.
