Assad Regime Informs of Death of 700 Prisoners From Hama in 2019

On Wednesday, a Syrian rights organization said that the Assad regime had informed the families of 700 prisoners from Hama governorate alone that their children had died since the start of the year.

The Syrians for Truth and Justice organization (independent) said in a report published on its website that the regime had sent registry departments in the governorate notices of prisoner deaths. The report added that the death certificates were delivered to families in stages without the corpses being hand over.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights revealed in a report it published at the end of April that the regime had informed registry departments in the country of the deaths of 890 prisoners since May 2018.

The regime is holding hundreds of thousands of people for political reasons, subjecting them to brutal torture, according to many local, regional and international rights reports based on documents, images, recordings and the testimonies of survivors.

There are no precise statistics about the number of prisoners who have died in Assad’s prisoners, but images leaked by the defected Military Police photographer known by the name “Caesar” at the start of 2014 confirmed the deaths of over 10,000 prisoners, in addition to those killed in Assad’s prisons before this year.
