Conference Needs to be Held Soon: Moscow

The Russian Foreign Ministry announced on Tuesday that representatives of the U.N., U.S. and Russia, have agreed on the need to hold the international conference in Syria as soon as possible.

"The participants in the Geneva meeting reached a common understanding that the invitation for the conference should come as soon as possible, sponsored by the U.N., for the launch of comprehensive dialogue among Syrians to adopt vital decisions on the future of the Syrian state, according to Geneva communiqué agreed on in June 30, 2012," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday, following a meeting of the U.N. Security Council on Tuesday.

The statement added that the composition of the Syrian opposition's delegation was high on the agenda at the meeting, and emphasized the need for the participants to represent a wide range of political powers and all spectrums of Syrian society.

The tripartite meeting also discussed the possibility of forming a delegation of participating countries as to ensure constructive efforts are made on the political process in Syria.
