Activists, writers and journalists exchanged the news on Thursday that the writer Fouad Hmera was detained by security forces on Thursday evening.
Little information was available but it is understood Hmera was detained while renewing his passport at a migration and passport office in Lattakia.
Many journalists and friends of Hmera confirmed the news.
Colleague and friend Rima Flehan wrote on her personal Facebook page that "Fouad is detained".
Hmera gave a newspaper interview days ago, published by the Syrian Observer in English, claiming not all Alawites in Syria are loyal to the regime and are actively participating in the revolution.
