Elaraby Calls for Establishment of Syrian Transitional Governing Body

Speaking with UN special envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura, Secretary General of the Arab League Dr. Nabil Elaraby stressed the need for a peaceful solution that leads to a transitional stage, where a transitional governing body with full powers could be established.

Elaraby discussed with de Mistura ways to establish a solution to the four-year Syrian crisis through the implementation of the internationally-backed Geneva statement.

Following talks with the UN envoy, Elaraby stressed the need for a “peaceful solution that leads to the transitional phase and the establishment of a transitional governing body with full powers".

"We should work to ensure that there are alternative solutions at hand and with the participation of all Syrians", Elaraby added.

The secretary general described the Syrian crisis as the largest tragedy in the 21st century, adding: “We must find a solution to protect Syria from the ongoing bloodshed since 2011. We must accelerate the efforts to protect the country from destruction".
