Assad to Velayati: Syria and its Allies Bent on Fighting Terrorism

Syria's resolve to fight terrorism will continue despite recent escalations by hostile countries who support extremists, Assad tells top Iranian diplomats

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad welcomed a senior advisor to the Iranian supreme leader, Ali Akbar Velayati, and Iranian Assistant Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian on Sunday.

Speaking at the meeting, President Assad stressed that Syria and its friends are determined to move ahead with fighting terrorism in all its forms.

This resolve to fight terrorism, he added, will continue despite the recent escalation by some hostile countries who, while claiming to be fighting terrorism, have beefed up funds and armaments to the terrorist gangs.

Assad noted that this escalation has been prompted by the Syrian people’s resilience over the years and the Syrian army’s substantial achievements against terrorism, supported by its friends, mainly Iran and Russia.

The president made clear that Syria and its allies are certain that eliminating the terrorists will be the first step toward establishing stability in the region and the world, and the real entry for the success of any political solution reached by the Syrians.

Velayati, in turn, affirmed the determination of the supreme leader of Iran and the Iranian leadership to continue supporting Syria’s government and people in the crucial fight against terrorism.

He expressed Iran’s appreciation of the “exceptional” steadfastness of the Syrian people and leadership in the face of the “fierce war” waged against them.

Velayati and Abdollahian acquainted President Assad with Iran’s efforts to support Syrian people’s self-determination, as well as Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Velayati also met with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem, who said recent developments on the ground have revealed those who are supporting terrorism and those who are fighting it.
