Discontent in Idleb Over Nusra’s Execution of Tortured Prisoners

Rights monitor says Islamist group incited "discontent" among locals in the northern province after handing over the corpse of a tortured prisoner following his execution

Unrest was reported in the city of Saraqeb in the Idleb countryside on Saturday after the Nusra Front returned the body of a former prisoner to his family with signs he was tortured during his seven-month imprisonment.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that “discontent prevailed in the town of Saraqeb in Idleb’s eastern countryside after the Nusra Front handed over the body of a young man from the town executed in the north-western Idleb countryside.” Sources said the corpse appeared to display signs of torture as a result of beatings received by the young man, who was executed by Nusra after seven months of imprisonment.

The past few months have seen protests in the city of Maarat al-Nouman near Saraqeb against the Nusra Front amid support for Division 13 of the Free Syrian Army (FSA).

Jaish al-Fatah (Army of Conquest), which includes seven Islamist groups including the Nusra Front and Ahrar al-Sham, has controlled all of Idleb province for the past year. The Nusra Front seized control of all the bases belonging to the FSA-alliance Syria Revolutionaries Front in Idleb province and the Hazm Movement in the Aleppo countryside.
