Lavrov: Eradicating Terror, Starting Political Process in Syria a Necessity

Russian FM explains fighting terror and starting political process a top priority, during meeting with German and French leaders in Berlin

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has stressed the necessity of eradicating terrorism from Syria and starting a comprehensive political process.

In a statement in Moscow on Tuesday, Lavrov said that it is necessary to eliminate terrorism completely from Syria and to start a comprehensive political process according to the resolutions of the UN Security Council and in the framework of the International Syria Support Group “ISSG”.

He indicated that these goals had been discussed in Berlin between President Vladimir Putin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande.

Lavrov added that Russia is set on separating the so-called “moderate opposition” from Nusra Front, the Islamic State group and other terrorist organizations.

He said that the Russian air forces are in Syria upon the request of the Syrian government to combat terrorism based on international law.
