The U.N. Security Council on Saturday unanimously adopted a resolution outlining the details of putting Syria’s chemical weapons stockpile under international control and ultimately destroying them.
Security Council members agreed upon the text and welcomed the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons' (OPCW) resolution issued earlier in the day which was in line with the Geneva framework on the destruction of chemical weapons in Syria.
Syria's permanent representative to the U.N., Bashar al-Jaafari said the resolution dispels the Syrian government's fears and welcomed Syria's accession to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC).
Jaafari said the resolution states that neither party in Syria is allowed to develop, produce or transport chemical weapons, calling on everyone to engage in the international conference on Syria due to be held in Geneva.
The UNSC members have all agreed to abide by the agreement, including the countries which are backing terrorists; namely Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, France and the U.S. and British governments, Jaafari pointed out.
He urged the countries that are supplying armed terrorist groups in Syria with funds and weapons to sever their support, indicating that they must comply with the resolution.
Jaafari said that the Syrian government's commitment to the CWC shows its seriousness, also reminding members that Syria has always encouraged a political solution to end the crisis, throwing its weight behind all meaningful efforts to reach that end.
He stressed Syria's full commitment to participation in Geneva II conference scheduled for November to find a political settlement to the crisis.
Responding to journalists' questions, Jaafari said the draft resolution No. 2118 bans support for armed terrorist groups in Syria by any country, not only in obtaining chemical weapons, but also bans any government, including the Saudi Arabian, from working against Geneva II.
“The resolution binds all member states to encourage the convention of Geneva II with a view to implement Geneva I,” he said.
