A joint meeting between Syria, Iraq and Iran was held in Tehran on Wednesday to discuss means of developing political solutions for combatting terrorism and re-establishing peace and stability in the region.
Representatives from the three countries said the meeting was the first of a series of talks to boost cooperation and coordination to tackle regional threats, particularly terrorism.
Syria’s representative, Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mikdad, said the goal of the meetings is to work towards establishing security and stability in the three participating countries, the region, and the world.
The combatting of terrorist movements like ISIS and Nusra will have a positive effect on the region and the world, Mikdad said, underlining the strong fraternal and historical relations between the three countries.
The Syrian minister stressed that cooperation between the three countries is based on preserving sovereignty and independence, asserting that Iran’s support for Syria and Iraq is based on mutual respect and confronting terrorism. Mikdad said that Iran’s call for cooperation is open to all those who wish to fight terrorism, noting that some countries claim to be fighting terrorism while they arm, train, and fund terrorists in Syria and Iraq.
The minister affirmed support for any genuine international counterterrorism efforts and for implementing relevant Security Council resolutions, calling on the UN to work towards implementing these decisions.
Mikdad also lauded Iran’s recent efforts to end the ordeal in Yemen.
Iranian Assistant Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian said the meetings are vital for combatting terrorism and exchanging viewpoints regarding recent developments in the region and the world.
In turn, Iraqi Assistant Foreign Minister Nizar al-Kherallah said that Syrian-Iraqi-Iranian coordination is essential in light of huge challenges facing the region, particularly the threat of terrorism, asserting Iraq’s support for Syria’s unity and sovereignty and for any political solution to resolve the current crisis.
The meeting follows a joint Syrian-Iranian-Swiss meeting on Tuesday in Tehran to coordinate humanitarian aid for the Syrian people, where representatives discussed the practical steps needed to provide necessary humanitarian aid for the Syrian people.
