Syria Calls on U.N. Security Council to Shoulder Responsibilities

The Syrian government calls on the U.N. to shoulder its responsibilities to prevent any aggression against Syria, Syria's permanent representative to the U.N. Bashar al-Jaafari, said.

Jafaari also called for renewed efforts to push ahead with a political solution to the crisis in Syria, in two identical letters directed to the U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and President of the U.N. Security Council, Maria Cristina Perceval.

Jaafari said Syria also calls on the Security Council to maintain its role as safety valve to prevent what he described as the "absurd" use of force, outside the framework of any international legitimacy.

"The Syrian government warned more than a year ago against the serious risks and possibility of the use of chemical materials by the armed terrorist groups in Syria," Jaafari said.

"Syria has informed, in official letters, both the U.N. Secretary General and the UN Security Council, of the activities of these groups, which coincided with a political, diplomatic and media campaign led by some countries which are directly responsible for the bloodshed in Syria and the prevention of a peaceful solution, in order to accuse the Syrian government of using chemical weapons," he said.

Jafaari said the Syrian government categorically dismissed any use of chemical weapons, adding that it was "the Syrian government which first asked the U.N. Secretary General for an objective investigation into the use of chemical weapon in Khan al-Assal in Aleppo".

Jaafari said that the U.S. Secretary of State, John Kerry claims that the U.S. administration has what he called "secret conclusive evidences," to be made public soon, "is a mere justification for waging a military aggression against Syria and pays no heed to international and U.N. calls for adherence to the U.N. charter and international law.".

He added that Kerry has adopted old stories, fabricated by terrorists more than a week ago, asserting that the numbers and information presented by Kerry are "completely false".
