SDF Spokesman Defects to Euphrates Shield Areas

Talal Sillo, the spokesman for the Syrian Democratic Forces, has defected from the American-backed militia and fled to the Euphrates Shield areas in northern Syria, local sources revealed on Wednesday.

The sources said that Sillo was able on Tuesday night to reach the areas controlled by the Free Syrian Army in the northern Aleppo countryside.

No additional details were provided around the spokesman's defection from the SDF, of which the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) represents the largest number of members, with support from the U.S.-led international coalition.

Born in Aleppo in 1965, Sillo served as an officer in the Syrian government forces in the '90s before being discharged after a few years. He joined the SDF when it was formed in 2015.

Sillo’s defection is the most prominent after the defection of SDF commander Abdel Karim al-Obeid, the group’s foreign relations official, in September 2016.
