Russia and China on Monday vetoed a draft resolution proposed by U.N. Security Council member states Spain, Egypt and New Zealand demanding a cease-fire in Aleppo city.
Syria’s envoy to the U.N., Bashar al-Jaafari, called upon countries to coordinate with the Syrian government if they are keen on the interests of the Syrian people or on reaching a political solution led by the Syrians themselves.
Jaafari affirmed that the Syrian government, backed by its allies and in accordance with the principles of international law, will not surrender to the attempts of the United States, United Kingdom and France to exploit the Security Council in order to support terrorists in Syria, and that it will not give up its constitutional and legal duty of expelling terrorists from Aleppo and all Syrian areas.
He indicated that U.N. special envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura and U.N. aid chief Stephen O’Brien had admitted in their latest briefings before the Security Council that terrorists have been using the civilians in Aleppo as human shields since they entered the city in 2012.
Jaafari said that the horrifying stories narrated by Aleppo locals who have been liberated from the terrorist organizations prove that the main reason for their suffering was the practices of the terrorist organizations.
