Palestine Branch Arrests Palestinian Prisoner Freed in Baumel Deal

The Palestine Branch, part of the Military Intelligence Directorate, arrested the Palestinian prisoner, Ahmed Khamis, who had been released from Israeli prison on Apr. 28, 2019, as part of a Russian-Israeli deal, according to the Action Group for Palestinians of Syria.

The group quoted its sources as saying that Khamis had been under investigation a number of times by the Air Force Intelligence after he had been transferred from Israeli prison to Syria by the International Red Cross, and then was arrested by the Palestine Branch.

Israeli authorities released Khamis along with another prisoner named Zidan al-Tawil, as part of a Russian-Israeli deal last April in exchange for handing over the remains of Israeli soldiers buried in Syria.

Khamis had refused to return to Syria, asking the body that negotiated for him to return him to the Palestinian city of al-Khalil. He is from the Yarmouk Camp in Damascus and a member of the Palestinian Fatah group.

Israel arrested Khamis in April 2015 as he tried to slip into a military base to carry out an attack against Israeli soldiers.
