Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday expressed hope that NATO adheres to the principles of international law after it recognized the danger of the situation in Syria.
In a press conference held in Brussels after the Russia-NATO Council meeting, Lavrov said: "We held talks and discussed an agreement on the chemical weapons of Syria and the Iranian nuclear program," Lavrov said.
"The statement signed today on Syria's chemical weapons supports the U.N. resolution in this regard, and we welcome it.”
NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said in a press conference that the only solution to the crisis in Syria is through an inter-Syrian dialogue based on the Geneva communique issued in June, 2012.
He added that the Geneva II conference scheduled for January was also discussed during the meeting.
The Russian Foreign Ministry's Commissioner for Human Rights, Democracy and Rule of Law, Konstantin Dolgov, reiterated Russia's call for releasing a group of nuns who were kidnapped by an armed terrorist group in Maloula, in the Damascus countryside.
Russia’s ITAR-TASS news agency quoted Dolgov condemning the kidnap.
"We call on those who kidnapped the nuns to safely release them immediately," he said.
