Moscow: Turkey’s Shelling of Syrian Territory is Open Support to Terrorism

The Russian Foreign Ministry expressed its deep concern over the aggressive actions of the Turkish government against Syria.

On Saturday, the Turkish army shelled villages in northern Aleppo province and hills in northern Lattakia.

The ministry said in a statement on Monday that Turkey’s shelling of Syrian territory is open support to international terrorism and violates UN Security Council resolutions and other obligations as a member state of the International Syria Support Group.

“Russia supports introducing this issue to the UN Security Council so that the Security Council gives a clear assessment to Ankara’s provocative line creating a threat to peace and security in the region of the Middle East and beyond,” it said.

“According to available information, the Turkish side is continuing to simultaneously help groups of jihadists and armed militants illegally enter Syrian territory to fortify the units of Nusra Front and [the Islamic State], as well as other terrorist organizations in battles,” the statement said, adding that “injured militants are brought across the border into Turkey.”

Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said that the international community and global media outlets are expressing concerns about the humanitarian situation in Syria and leveling accusations at Russia while at the same time ignoring Turkey’s actions near its borders.
