Jarba to Attend Geneva II, With Conditions

A source from the political board of the Syrian National Coalition, denied a report in the New York Times regarding the opposition's participation in the proposed peace conference on Syria in Geneva.

The report said Jarba was willing to meet with representatives of President Bashar Assad without preconditions.

The source said Jarba, the Coalition president, did not say he would "attend Geneva II without preconditions, as the New York Times quoted him as saying, adding that Jarba's words had been taken out of context.

In his interview in New York on Saturday, Jarba said he wanted assurances that there would be a deadline for making progress for the talks.

“We believe there should be a precise time frame,” Jarba reported told the Times. “The regime is used to manipulating the process and wasting time.”

Jarba told U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry clearly that neither Assad, nor any officials from the Syrian regime involved in the Syrian bloodshed, can have a place in the transitional government," the source told Zaman al-Wasl.
