The flagrant Israeli attacks on Syrian armed forces sites proves Israel is working with terrorist groups, including the al-Qaeda aligned jihadist Nusra Front, the Syrian Foreign and Expatriates Ministry said Sunday.
The ministry said it sent two identical letters to the UN Security Council and the UN Secretary General Sunday outlining the attacks. The letters stated that at 1:40 am on Sunday, 5 May, Israeli warplanes carried out a missile air strike from Syrian occupied territories in the Golan Heights and southern Lebanon on three sites of the Armed Forces inside Syrian territory. The strikes targeted the northeast of Jamraya, in Maysaloun, Damascus, and a paragliding airport located in the Dimas area of the Damascus countryside.
The ministry said that the attacks proved that Israel aimed to provide "direct military support" to terrorist groups in Syria, after they had "failed to gain any ground," in their military battles against the Syrian armed forces.
"This leaves no room for doubt Israel is the main beneficiary, the agent and perpetrator of terrorist attackstargeting the Syrian state and its people, directly or via its operatives inside," the ministry said in the letters.
The ministry warned that Israel's continued aggression "would increase regional tensions" and risked dragging it in to a full blown regional war that had the potential to destabilize the region and threaten global security.
The ministry also said that the Syrian government considers the U.S. complicit in the Israeli aggression, citing statements from the U.S. preceding the attacks, whichit said "encouraged Israel to carry out its aggression and provided it with a political cover to violate Syrian sovereignty a clear breach of the UN Charter and international law."
"While stressing its right to defend itself , its land and sovereignty, the Syrian Arab Republic demands that the UN Security Council shoulder its responsibilities to stop Israeli aggression against Syria, prevent its recurrence and prevent the deterioration of regional security," the ministry said.
