Iranian Assistant Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs, Hossein Amir Abdullahian, hailed Syria's cooperation with a U.N. chemical weapons investigation team in Syria on Tuesday, also reiterating Iran's support for a political solution to the conflict in the country.
"The mechanism for solving the crisis in Syria is only political, based on a comprehensive national dialogue," Abdullahian said.
He said some parties to the conflict were supporting a political opposition while also supporting extremist terrorist gangs in Syria, in what he described as a "strategic mistake."
Abdullahian's remarks were made during a meeting with the U.N. Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Jeffrey Feltman.
He also expressed Iran's support for the U.N. political initiative to hold an international conference on Syria.
Feltman expressed hope that the upcoming international conference on Syria would succeed, describing the current regional situation, particularly in Syria, as "dangerous".
In Lebanon, Lebanese caretaker Minister of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs, Adnan Mansour, confirmed that any U.S. or western aggression towards Syria will have negative repercussions on the whole Middle East and will not serve regional peace and stability.
In a radio interview, Mansour said that Lebanon will not stand by and watch if Israel chooses to exploit the aggression on Syria to attack Hezbollah, pointing to the resistance and the army that will protect Lebanon.
