Food Prices Soar in Damascus

Damascus markets have witnessed incredible price rises following the announcement of the U.S. plans to strike Syrian military installations.

Despite Obama's announcement to postpone the strike, prices have continued to soar, especially foodstuffs including vegetables, fruits and meat.

The price of a kilogram of potato rose from 80 SP to 120 SP, aubergine from 50 SP to 85 SP, cucumber from 60 SP to 120 SP, beans from 250 SP to 325 SP, and tomatoes 50 SP to 80 SP.

The price of a whole chicken rose from 500 SP to 700 SP, red meat from 1500 SP per kilogram to 1700 SP, a package of bread from 35 S.P to 75 and then 100 SP.  The price of a carton of eggs also rose from 600 SP to 700 SP, which means that the price of one egg is now 25 SP. The price of oil, margarine, cheese and dairy products, cereals and legumes also rose.

Traders have exploited intensified war talk in Syria to the monopolize materials and control prices. Meanwhile, the civilians are suffering from the impact of the high prices as much as from repression and violence.
