Dozens Killed, Wounded in Russian Strike on IDP Camp Near Jordan Border

Russian warplanes bombarded a camp for displaced people on Tuesday on the Syrian border with Jordan, killing 10 people and wounding dozens, according to Syrian opposition members.

The members said that several warplanes bombed a camp in which a few hundred people were living, most of them women and children, trapped between the dividing area on the Syrian side of the border.

Said Seif al-Qalamouni, the spokesman for the Martyr Ahmad al-Abdou Brigades, which is part of the Free Syrian Army, said that the raids had occurred near the Hadalat camp, which is one of the largest camps in the area. Another opposition member and a Western diplomat confirmed the event.

The camps shelter a minimum 60,000 refugees who have fled from eastern and central Syria, remaining stuck for months in a desolate area near the border between Iraq, Syria and Jordan. Jordan has prevented their entry for security reasons.

Relief workers said last month that the refugees have suffered from a shortage of food since the Jordanian army closed the area.

Government sources said that the northeastern border area of the country, at the al-Hadalat and al-Rukban points, was “still a closed military site” and that this closure was “continuous.”

Sources meanwhile told the Jordanian newspaper Al-Ghad in statements published on Wednesday, that Jordan had agreed to allow food, water and supplies to the Syrian refugees stuck in these two areas.

The sources added that this permission was “until international organizations find an alternative way of assisting the Syrian refugees.”
