The U.N. Special Envoy for Syria said it is up to the Syrian people alone to determine the future of their country, stressing that a political solution must be found to end the ongoing crisis in Syria.
Speaking to the Iranian IRNA news agency, Staffan de Mistura said he discussed with Iran’s Ambassador to Lebanon, Syria’s neighbor, Mohammad Fathali, the situation and latest developments in both countries where he stressed that a solution to the crisis in Syria must be political.
De Mistura noted in his statement, published on Friday, that he discussed during his meeting with Fathali an upcoming visit to Tehran, his next stop after Beirut as part of his tour of the region.
In comments made during his visit to Beirut regarding the program and the scheduled meetings with Iranian officials, de Mistura said the talks in Tehran will be focused on means to solve the crisis in Syria politically.
