Coalition to Choose Leader Through Consensus

The Syrian National Coalition started two days of meeting in Istanbul on Thursday to choose a new leader and an executive bureau.

Zaman al-Wasl has learned that former Coalition leader Sheik Ahmad Mouaz al-Khatib and the former Muslim Brotherhood leader Ali Bayanouni will not attend the meeting.

The main agenda for the meeting is to choose a new President of the Coalition to replace Khatib, who resigned in April.

Opposition figure Abdubasset Sida said that the members of Coalition will choose the president via consensus rather than elections, because the process of nomination and election might cause new cracks in the Coalition.

"If we are unable to reach a consensus on the name we will resort to the election, but we hope that it will not happen,” Sida, who is a member of the executive bureau of the Coalition, told Zaman al-Wasl.

Sida revealed that the selection of the president will be delayed until Friday. On Thursday, members discussed reports of developments from inside Syria.
