President Bashar al-Assad on Thursday congratulated Russian President Vladimir Putin on the occasion of Victory Day, comparing the ongoing battle for Syria’s Aleppo to that of Stalingrad.
In a cable to Putin, Assad noted that the city of Aleppo has come to resemble the heroic Stalingrad, stating that “despite the brutality and cruelty of the enemy, and the great sacrifices and pains, our cities, towns, people and army will not be satisfied until they defeat the enemy and achieve victory serving the interests of Syria, the region and the world.”
Assad underlined the high cost the Russian people paid to defeat Nazi Germany and write down the legend of steadfastness that will inspire future generations.
