The Arab League announced, through its Secretary-General Mahmound Afifi, that the return of Syria (the Assad regime) had not yet been included on the agenda for the Tunisia summit.
Afifi said that the agenda included about 20 projects and issues, headed by the Palestinian issue and the situations in Syria, Libya and Yemen, as well as supporting peace and development in Sudan, and Iranian interference in Arab countries’ affairs.
He added that there was an item related to displaced people in Arab countries, especially Iraqis, included at Baghdad’s request, adding that other items could be introduced during the course of preparatory meetings.
On Sunday, Afifi announced in a press conference, held with a media delegation accompanying a delegation of the General Secretariat of the Arab League at the summit, that the issue of Syria’s return was not included on the agenda, and that so far, no party had officially proposed it, but that there would be discussion of the Syrian crisis.
In response to questions about US President Donald Trump announcing in a tweet that the time had come to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan, Afifi said that, “the resolutions of ministerial meetings and Arab summits confirm the Arab and Syrian nature of the Golan in accordance with the Security Council resolution issued in 1981.”
He continued, “It is possible in light of the recent development for Arab countries to call for a new addition to the draft resolution pertaining to the Golan based on what is emerging.”
The summit, which is scheduled for next month, will discuss the Turkish intervention in northern Iraq and Iranian occupation of Emirati islands, as well as support for Somalia and follow up on the matter of developing an Arab national security organization.
