Residents of Maarrat al-Numan in northern Idleb province on Sunday took to the streets to protest against the mounting abuses of Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham, the powerful Islamist alliance led by Al-Qaeda’s former branch in Syria.
The protest followed tensions which escalated last Thursday when Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham stormed Free Syrian Army positions in Maarrat al-Numan, killing and wounding several people, residents told Zaman al-Wasl.
On Thursday, Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham opened fire on tens of civilians who also protested against the group’s presence in the town.
This week, the group also seized a base belonging to Faylaq al-Sham (Sham Legion) in the village of Rakaya Sijneh in the southern countryside of Idleb.
