Syria Rejects any Talks that Breach Sovereignty

Syria has always advocated a political solution and comprehensive, inclusive National dialogue to solve the crisis in the country, Information Minister Omran al-Zoubi said Monday.

In an interview with Lebanon's al-Manar TV station, Zoubi said Syria welcomes the outcomes of a scheduled meeting between Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov and his U.S. counterpart, John Kerry.

"The Syrian government expressed optimism, but a cautious optimism, since words are not enough," Zoubi said.

"There should be subsequent steps," he added.

Zoubi said Syria needed to establish whether the Russian-U.S. understanding "reflected the importance of the political solution as the necessary option for everyone involved," and to know whether the Americans and their allies' position is sincere about pursuing the political solution as "the only solution," or mere public rhetoric.

Zoubi said Syria needed more details about the conference before agreeing to participate, but said the political decision on the principle of a political solution to support international efforts and combat terrorism was clear.

Zoubi emphasized that Syria will not take part in any initiative that would directly or indirectly infringe upon Syria's sovereignty.
