International envoy for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi said on Wednesday that neither the government nor the opposition are ready for a proposed international conference on Syria, following talks with U.S. and Russian officials.
He suggested the conference would likely take place in July, rather than June, as scheduled.
Brahimi said the only sticking point for the conference was "the Syrian component" of the conference, telling reporters in Geneva: "The Syrian sides are not ready."
The conference would begin with a high-level meeting over two days chaired by U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. That would be followed by intensive negotiations between the Syrian parties, facilitated by Brahimi.
"We are all agreed that a political solution to the crisis in Syria is the only possible solution and it is extremely urgent," Brahimi said.
