The opposition Syrian National Coalition offices in the United States will be closed in two weeks due to allegations of violations of American laws for fiscal dealing, a well-informed source told Zaman al-Wasl.
The source said the decision to close the office had already been taken and will be implemented within two weeks, unless the Coalition fails to address the allegations.
Until now, the Coalition has been represented by liaison offices in Washington and New York, despite being considered as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people by U.S.
The decision could raise questions about that recognition since the White House announced last May that it would recognize the main opposition Syrian National Coalition offices as a diplomatic foreign mission and it would be recognized under U.S. law, according to Reuters.
U.S. State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said on May 5 (the recognition) would facilitate banking and security services for the opposition in the United States and help it reach out to Syrians living there.
The latest decision reveals the latest difficulties key opposition groups are facing, according to analysts.
