Samira al-Sahli has become the first Palestinian woman to die under torture in Syrian regime prisons, according to the Palestinian Committee for Human Rights.
Sahli worked in aid and relief before being arrested on her way to a center for collecting aid in June this year.
The 53-year-old was a mother of four. Her brother was killed by a sniper four months ago.
"Sahli is the first Palestinian woman to die under torture in Syrian prison. She helped displaced people in Yarmouk camp for Palestinian refugees who came two years ago," said Ala’a Aboud, an activist.
He added that she used to nurse patients and treat their wounds, besides helping in other relief activities like cooking.
The activist revealed that air force intelligence’s agents arrested Sahli months ago on her way to collect an aid package from an office of the United Nations Relief and Work Agency for Palestinians (UNRWA), despite guarantees from the regime that no one could have been arrested during aid delivery.
Sahli’s death raised the number of Palestinians killed under torture in Syrian regime’s prisons to 272, according to statistics from the 'Group of Work for Palestinians in Syria.'
