UNRWA: Suffering in Yarmouk Linked to Presence of Armed Groups

United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) Commissioner-General Pierre Krähenbühl stated the purpose of his visit to Damascus is to discuss ways to effectively distribute aid to civilians in Yarmouk camp.

“With the help of the Syrian government, we offered aid to 500 persons who left the camp and went to Yalda town,” Krähenbühl said at a press conference.

The continued suffering of the civilians in Yarmouk is directly linked to the presence of armed groups occupying the camp, the Commissioner-General explained, claiming efforts are underway to pressure these groups to assume responsibility towards civilians.

“UNRWA cooperates and coordinates with the Syrian government to find a place where civilians have the ability to get the aid,” the official said.

Nearly 2,000 people have fled the ISIS and Nusra-occupied camp in the past few days with the help of the Syrian army.
