Prime Minister Wael al-Halki said that Syria is not witnessing an economic crisis but rather an organized economic war that aims at weakening the Syrian pound and country as a whole.
Halki's comments came during a meeting of Syria's cabinet on Tuesday to discuss measures to stabilize the pound following an unprecedented drop in the dollar exchange rate over the weekend.
He stressed that the government is working to confront this through a number of measures including cooperation with a number of civil society groups, businesses, and media outlets.
Halki instructed the relevant ministries to take punitive measures against monopolists and profiteers, calling for greater monitoring of market prices and private transport companies in Damascus, also calling on the health ministry to investigate the smuggling of medicine on the black market and to prevent the illicit trafficking of pharmaceuticals.
