Regime Forces Fail to Break Jobar District in Eastern Damascus

For the fourth day in a row, regime forces and allied militias carried out a broad attack on the Jobar district in the east of the Syrian capital Damascus, in an attempt to break into the neighborhood, leading to the eruption of heavy clashes during which the opposition managed to repulse the attack and inflict heavy losses on the attacking forces.

The media activist Alaa Eddin Kurdi from the Damascus countryside told ARA News that “regime forces and Iranian, Lebanese and Iraqi militias carried out an attack on the Jobar district from four directions. Heavy clashes occurred during which the rebel groups managed to repulse the attack and kill more than 20 fighters in an ambush in western Jobar, coinciding with artillery and rocket shelling on the district without any injuries recorded among civilians.”

Kurdi added that “the regime forces and allied militias have been trying to take control of Jobar in eastern Damascus for a number of months, and during their attempts they have suffered about 300 dead and wounded, in addition to the destruction of a number of military vehicles.”

Taking control over the Jobar district would mean cutting off the opposition supply route in the eastern district of Damascus, while the importance of the district is that it is a Damascus district adjacent to regime-controlled areas and near Al-Abassin square, one of the capital’s biggest squares.
