Syria’s Foreign Ministry has called on the United Nations Security Council to fulfill its responsibilities in maintaining international peace and security, and end the U.S.-led coalition's crimes against innocent Syrian civilians.
In a statement, the ministry said that on Aug. 16 coalition aircrafts targeted residential neighborhoods in the city of Raqqa, killing 17 civilians and injuring many others, while also causing damage to infrastructure. It added that the raids on the neighborhood of Al-Thakana also led to the destruction of a church, despite there being no Islamic State (ISIS) members in the vicinity.
The ministry added that the coalition planes have engaged in the systematic and deliberate bombing of residential neighborhoods in extreme disregard for international humanitarian law and human rights.
It further called on the participating states to immediately dissolve the coalition on the basis it operates outside the framework of the U.N. and without approval from the Syrian government.
