Mariani: We Must Learn From Our Lessons and Restore Ties With Syria

Thierry Mariani, a member of the European Parliament and the French National Rally party, considered that president, Emmanuel Macron, along with his predecessor, François Hollande, took negative positions towards the region, especially Syria. He felt that Macron’s positions are harming the interests of France, and this mistake is political and strategic.

Mariani said, in an interview with al-Watan, that Syria won the war and the Syrian Arab Forces regained control over most of the Syrian territory which was under the control of terrorists. “Now, we must learn from these lessons and restore our relations with Syria and the countries of the region,” he said.

Mariani described President Bashar al-Assad’s vision towards reconstruction as very clever. He pointed out that President al-Assad considers the reason for the failure of the West and the United States in Afghanistan is their inability to change Afghan society; They took care of the military aspect and ignored the social aspect. After twenty years, everything collapsed, so his priority is to develop the cultural level of the Syrian people so that the Syrian society remains united.

Mariani pointed out that the sanctions directly harm the Syrian people and renders their lives more difficult. He said: “We can understand the existence of sanctions against specific people and names, even if it is wrong. However, we can not understand collective punishments on an entire population, as this becomes criminal. When you meet people and they tell you that they no longer have enough food, or even milk, for their children, you discover that it is no longer political but criminal.”
