Mouaz al-Khatib resigns anew

Mr. Moaz Al-Khatib announced anew his resignation as President of the Syrian Coalition.  He wrote on his facebook page, “When a bird is in a cage it remains helpless. Yesterday I flew out of the deceptive gold cage I had been in. Now with the sons and daughters of Syria, and nothing else, I will continue the road towards freedom."

The Syrian Coalition issued a statement to say that al Khatib “resigned from the Syrian Coalition several weeks ago, however the executive members of the Coalition referred his resignation to the General Authority for a final decision. Yesterday, on April 20, 2013, during the Friends of Syria conference, Mr. Moaz Al-Khatib confirmed his resignation, but added that he wishes to continue representing the local councils in Damascus, within the Coalition, once his resignation is accepted.

The statement added that “although the executive members of the Syrian Coalition have worked hard to convince Mr. Al-Khatib to continue in his current role, they await the General Assembly's meeting during which a final decision can be made. In the event they should accept the resignation, a new president will be elected as stipulated in the rules and procedures drafted by the Syrian Coalition.”

Unlike his resignation announcement last March, the current resignation was met with little coverage in the Arab and Western media.
