Abdullah al-Dardari to Head Transitional Government

Europe is encouraging the nomination of Dardari as PM, as Farouk al-Sharaa is losing his chances

Germany is pushing for the nominatin of economist and former Syrian Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs and Trade, Abdullah al-Dardari for prime minister of a transitional government in Syria.

The diplomat said that Europeans had first advocated Walid al-Muallem, but that a media appearance in which he had adopted similar rhetoric to President Bashar Assad, and another where he appeared sitting in the first row during Assad's speech, meant that he was rejected as a candidate.

"After Farouk al-Sharaa gave that newspaper interview, he became the first nominee for the position, but soon afterwards he was dismissed on the basis that he doesn’t have a great deal of support inside Syria,' the source added.
