Jaafari: Serious Discussions on Counterterrorism Have Begun in Geneva

The Syrian government delegation, headed by Dr. Bashar al-Jaafari, held on Tuesday morning in Geneva a new session of talks with the United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura, in the framework of the seventh round of intra-Syrian dialogue.

In a statement following the session, Jaafari said that the delegation held serious discussions with de Mistura on the issue of counterterrorism, or what is known as the fourth basket.

Jaafari said these discussions lasted for two and a half hours, and that this paves the way toward resuming the discussion on this issue, which is the top priority for his delegation.

He said that counterterrorism should also be the top priority for the entire world, because terrorism has become an international phenomenon that has struck the biggest capitals in the world.

“What we were warning against, about terrorism becoming a global phenomenon that will affect everyone including its sponsors, has become a reality now” he added.

Jaafari said that a meeting is underway between legal and technical experts from the Syrian government delegation and de Mistura’s team to discuss the 12-principle paper on the basis and goals of the political process.

The seventh round began on Monday with the government delegation holding talks with de Mistura.
