Violent Clashes Erupt at Jordanian Border Crossing

Rebels attack last remaining regime-held crossing on Jordan's border
Violent Clashes Erupt at Jordanian Border Crossing

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said that fierce clashes are taking place between Islamist factions and regime forces in the vicinity of the Nasab border crossing with Jordan.

The Observatory claims the clashes erupted after the rebels managed to attack the border crossing area and besiege it, with the SOHR reporting casualties on both sides.

The
Nasab border crossing is the only official regime-held crossing with Jordan after the Nusra Front and other battalions seized the old Jumruk crossing in October 2013.

The Observatory’s Director, Rami Abdel Rahman, explained to the Agence France Presse agency: "opposition battalions began their offensive yesterday in an attempt to control the crossing", claiming opposition forces managed to control the crossing and "eliminate the presence of regime forces on the Jordanian border".

The border region of Daraa has witnessed several battles over the past two years, during which opposition fighters managed to control a long border line with Jordan, with the exception of the Nasab border crossing.
