U.S. Official Tells Syrian Opposition: No Military Intervention Against Assad

Syrian opposition sources in Washington have reported from a senior official in the American National Security Council that Washington will not do anything that may anger the Iranians in the Middle East, which means that the United States "will not undertake any military effort, directly or indirectly, against the forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad".

Speaking to his Syrian guest, the U.S. official added that "any solution you want to offer us with respect to Syria must include Iran and Russia".

Those who participated in the meeting mentioned are lucky, as the Syrian opposition also complains that President Barack Obama's administration doesn’t allow them to attend meetings with senior officials, but confines communications to Daniel Rubenstein, who is trying to play the diplomatic role played by the former American ambassador to Syria, Robert Ford.

In addition to Rubenstein, Syrian dissidents meet regularly with the U.S. permanent envoy to the United Nations, Samantha Power, whom Syrian dissidents describe as entirely supportive of the Syrian issue, even crying in almost every meeting.

But Power, the former journalist and activist, tells her guests that she has a limited influence within the administration, even though she does not spare any effort to provide any assistance from her position in the international organization.

The American officials told the opposition figures that "the solution in Syria comes in the wake of the solution with Iran and in agreement with it". This indicates that Washington believes that Iran has a supreme role in Syria, and that the power of Assad and his regime has actually ended.

The diplomatic dissident and the former "second man" in the Syrian Embassy in Washington, Bassam Barbandi, agrees with the U.S. vision that the final word in Syria has become, however, in the hands of Iran. In an interview with al-Rai, Barbandi said that "some American officials think of the Iraqi solution in Syria, which means the removal of Assad, and the appointment of an acceptable person as an alternative for him, and to benefit from the army and the government to fight extremists".
