The U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has expressed his grave concern for the safety of civilians caught up in the ongoing offensive by the terrorist organization of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) on the northern Syrian town of Ayn al-Arab, also known as Kobani.
In a statement released by his spokesperson, Ban said that ISIS is continuously carrying out its “barbarous campaign” and committing extensive violations of human rights and humanitarian law in areas It has taken over in Syria and Iraq.
Ban’s statements came at the time when the Turkish government is suppressing protests that have broken out in various cities denouncing ISIS attacks in Syria and Iraq.
The protesters condemned the Turkish government’s support to the terrorist organization and its flagrant collusion with its members who have been for years using the Turkish land to infiltrate the Syrian territories and carry out heinous crimes against the Syrian people.
Similarly, U.N. Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura voiced concern regarding ISIS attacks in Ayn al-Arab, warning that they threaten the lives of thousands of civilians.
Also speaking out was spokesperson for the Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) Rupert Colville who expressed alarm over the situation, referring to the “atrocious record of repeated murders and summary executions of prisoners in both Syria and Iraq.”
