UN Delegation Ends Visit to Besieged Neighborhood in Homs

A United Nations delegation headed by the Director of the Office of UN Special Envoy to Syria, Khawla Matar, has ended its visit to the neighborhood of Waer in the city of Homs.

The visit’s main goal was to explore the residents’ views on various aspects of the proposed settlements, such as their acceptance for the political survival of president Assad in the event of a solution, and their views towards Iran and other main regime backers.

The delegation visited several besieged regions in Syria, such as the city of Muadamiyat al-Sham in western Ghouta, to provide a detailed report to UN special envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura, to assist him in the construction of an integrated vision for a political solution.

Matar held three consecutive meetings with various groups in the neighborhood, including some dignitaries, rebels and the Revolutionary Council of Homs. In all the three meetings, the participants informed the delegation about the war crimes committed by the regime in the neighborhood, as well as in Homs.

Participants also explained the current military situation, and the regime's continual use of banned military weapons to attack the neighborhood. The delegation was later invited on a brief tour of the neighborhood.

Waer is the last opposition-held neighborhood in the city of Homs, and is observing a temporary truce with the Assad regime.
