Turkey: Syrian “Constitutional Committee” Will See the Light Soon

On Sunday, Turkey said that it was trying to establish a committee to draft a new constitution for Syria in cooperation with countries concerned with the Syria issue.

This was announced by Turkish Foreign Minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu, during a meeting in the Beyoglu area in Istanbul, according to the Anadolu agency.

The agency quoted him as saying that his country’s efforts focused on, “establishing a committee to draft a new constitution for Syria and to revive the Geneva process in parallel with the Astana and Sochi tracks,” adding that the coming days will see the establishment of this committee.

He said that the constitutional draft committee, which they are trying to establish, will include representatives of the opposition and the Assad regime, as well as civil society.

Cavusoglu said that his country was trying to “coordinate with the United States regarding what Turkey will do in northern Syria after the American withdrawal,” according to the agency.

He added, “The talk now is about how to administer the American withdrawal process and achieve lasting stability in Syria by coordinating with neighboring and concerned countries, including Russia and Iran.”

These efforts come alongside other efforts for a ceasefire in Idleb through an agreement between Ankara and Moscow.
