The Syrian people alone must be responsible for deciding their destiny through free elections and without foreign interference, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said Monday.
In a statementmade to Iranian press, Mehmanparast said foreign forces seekto impose their own agenda on the Syrian people and the region, saying that the crisis in Syria was not an internal conflict.
"What Syria is experiencing has nothing to do with internal issues; there are specific political goals behind it, mainly the protectionof Israel," he said.
Mehmanparast said that Syria reached its current state of crisis as a result of interference by foreign and regional powers, adding that Israel and its U.S. and Western allies sought to destabilize the region and undermine the influence of regional powers.
