Syrian Opposition Gets American Missiles

A source in the Syrian armed opposition has told Agence France Press that Syrians fighting to overthrow President Bashar Assad received for the first time 20 American made anti-tank "Law" rockets.

The source, who requested anonymity, said that "the disciplined and moderate fighters of Hazm movement", which is part of the Free Syrian Army, "received for the first time 20 Law anti-tank rockets from a Western country".

The Hazm movement includes a number of military officers and ex-soldiers, who defected from the army to join the movement of armed opposition against the regime.

"The opposition has been promised more missiles if they were used in an effective manner," the source added that

The source said the missiles have so far been used in the regions of Edlib, Aleppo and Latakia in northern Syria. A video distributed by Masarat Media Network showed opposition gunmen using many of the missiles in unspecified locations in rural areas of Syria.

An official from the armed opposition said that "most of the targets were tanks, and these missiles were used 20 times, 100% effectively, as they hit their targets".

The opposition has repeatedly called the Western countries to provide sophisticated weapons. The member of the Syrian National Coalition, Louay Mekdad asked the international community to "help the opposition to stand against the Syrian regime and Iran, the main supporter of this regime, by providing the armed opposition with anti-aircraft weapons."
