The Syrian government aims to boost its coordination with the UN relief agency in order to deliver housing, education and health services to Syrians in need.
Omar Ghalawanji, deputy prime minister for services affairs and minister of local administration, met with Director of the UNHCR Bureau for the Middle East and North Africa, Amin Awad, to discuss furthering cooperation in relief and humanitarian fields.
Ghalawanji stressed the importance of uniting and coordinating efforts to ensure the highest level of professionalism in providing aid, drinking water, education, and health and social services to persons in all provinces.
The Syrian politician also reviewed measures taken by the Higher Committee for Relief in providing shelters, underlining cooperation with the UNHCR regarding its first response plan in 2012. The UNHCR works in parallel with the Syrian government on the rehabilitation and restoration of makeshift housing centers for displaced persons.
Ghalawanji also reviewed efforts by the UNHCR to build temporary housing units and to rehabilitate partly-damaged houses.
For his part, Awad stressed the importance of cooperation between the Syrian government and the UNHCR, highlighting the need to continue the coordination of relief efforts and meeting the needs of the displaced persons.
