Syria, Iran Say Combating Terror is Priority at Geneva

Syria and Iran said Tuesday that the priority of the upcoming international Geneva II conference on Syria should be combating terrorism and halting financial support and arms supplies to terrorist groups.

 

During a meeting on Tuesday, Deputy Foreign and Expatriates Minister Faisal Mekdad and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif both warned of the danger posed by the terrorist groups in Syria to the region’s security and stability. They called for concerted regional and international efforts to fight and uproot terrorism.

 

Both sides discussed the latest developments on the forthcoming international conference on Syria.

 

Mekdad said that Syria is going to the conference and confirmed the necessity to secure all conditions for the conference’s success to combat terrorism, end support to the takfiri terrorist groups head towards dialogue between the Syrian people and under Syrian leadership. He rejected any foreign interference and emphasized the need to protect Syrian sovereignty.

 

The Iranian Foreign Minister, for his part, asserted the need for concerted efforts to fight the terrorism which has ravaged Syria and is spreading through the region, jeopardizing security and stability.
