The Political Commission of the Syrian National Coalition issued a decision to dismiss the Coalition's ambassador in Qatar, Nizar al-Haraki, after opposition activists demanded his dismissal through a social media campaign, following the embassy's decision to renew passports of Syrians living in Qatar.
Member for the Political Commission, Badr Jamous, denied the problem of passport renewals was the only reason for Haraki’s dimissal, pointing out several reasons for the decision, most importantly, Haraki showed lack of commitment to Coalition's decisions. Haraki also participated in political missions and workshops in several countries without permission from the Coalition, such as the Moscow Forum as a member for Sheikh Mouaz al-Khatib's delegation.
Jamous confirmed the Coalition has formed a fact-finding committee for the issue surrounding the renewal of passports, where the committee will examine the merits of the case and its legal and procedural dimensions.
For his part, Haraki said in a letter to the President of the Coalition, Khaled Khoja, that the Coalition's decision to dismiss him was unfair.
Haraki claimed the Coalition has declared itself judge, jury and executioner, in light of the fact the Political Commission did not attempt to hear Haraki’s appeal, nor wait for the results of the fact-finding committee.
A group of activists recently organized a social media campaign which demanded the dismissal of Haraki from his posting in Qatar in response to the unauthorized renewal of passports.
