Russian Ambassador to Syria Comments on Syrian-Turkish Rapprochement

Russian Ambassador to Syria Alexandr Yefimov has stated that the media’s portrayal of the Syrian-Turkish rapprochement path is premature. In an interview with the Syrian newspaper “Al-Watan,” Yefimov emphasized that the quadripartite formula, consisting of Russia, Iran, Syria, and Turkey, is the primary dialogue mechanism for this issue. He added that direct contacts between the Syrian Arab Republic and the Turkish Republic require careful preparation, which is currently underway.

Yefimov stressed that restoring Syrian-Turkish relations as they were in the past will have positive effects on the region in general and not just on Syria and Iraq. He noted that no one can argue that restoring Syrian-Turkish relations, which were previously characterized by good neighborliness, will not have a positive impact. Not only in the situation in the Syrian Arab Republic, but it will also contribute to improving the situation in the region in general.

Yefimov also commented on the situation on the ground in Syria, especially in the Al-Tanf area, where American forces are present, stating that stability and security in the Syrian Arab Republic and its environs cannot be achieved except with unconditional respect for Syria’s unity, sovereignty over its entire territory, independence, and territorial integrity.

Regarding the Constitutional Committee, Yefimov noted that this path stopped after Switzerland lost its position as a neutral platform by joining the sanctions imposed on Russia. Work is underway to find an alternative location, with Baghdad and other Arab capitals being considered as a new platform.
